Indian PM to Steal the Show at the Mother of all Parades?

Narendra Modi is expected to visit Moscow on May 9, according to a Russian news agency, TASS, citing a source in Indian military circles. The visit is reportedly in the planning stages and is likely to take place.

Discussions are also underway about the potential participation of the Indian military in the Victory Day parade. An Indian military contingent is expected to arrive in Moscow at least a month prior to the event to participate in the rehearsals.

India and Russia have strengthened their military cooperation through a recent bilateral agreement on logistical cooperation, aimed at facilitating joint military events.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had earlier confirmed that several international guests would be attending the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskow stated that Russia welcomes all foreign guests who recognize the historical significance of this day.

Despite Western pressure, the relationship between India and Russia remains stable. India has not joined the Western sanctions against Russia since the Ukraine conflict began in 2022 and has instead expanded its economic ties with Moscow. Modi has visited Russia twice in the past year and Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India later this year.

Other guests expected to attend the parade include Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokajev and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Speculation is also emerging about the potential attendance of a high-ranking US official. According to Defense Minister Andrei Beloussow, military units from a total of 19 friendly states have been invited.
