German metalworkers’ union leader calls for swift implementation of government plans

The head of the German metalworkers’ union, Christiane Benner, has urged the government to accelerate the implementation of its plans, following the first meeting of the coalition committee. According to Benner, it is crucial that the right impulses are felt by all in the country and lead to increased confidence for both individuals and businesses by the summer, as time is of the essence.

Benner praised the coalition committee’s “green light” for several measures that the union has long been pushing for, including investments, simplified planning and approval processes for hydrogen, wind power and heat technologies, a reduced electricity tax and measures to reduce network charges and promote electric mobility.

In particular, Benner highlighted the Tariftreuegesetz, which aims to strengthen collective bargaining agreements. She described the initiative as “long overdue” saying it will ensure fair and reliable pay for more people, a good and necessary step.
