Israeli military intercepts Huthi rocket

On Thursday, the Israeli military intercepted a rocket fired by the Huthi group, marking the second time a Yemeni rocket has been launched at Israel since the breakdown of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The US has intensified its airstrikes against the Iran-backed militant group.

The Huthi group has taken responsibility for the launch, which was aimed at supporting the Palestinians and in response to the renewed Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, which has killed nearly 500 people since the fragile ceasefire ended on Tuesday.

According to the Israeli Defense Forces, the rocket was intercepted before it could reach Israeli territory and no casualties were reported by the Israeli rescue services.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a Huthi military spokesperson, stated that Yemeni rocket units had targeted the international Ben Gurion Airport, located 20 kilometers southeast of Tel Aviv, with a ballistic “Hypersound rocket” of the Palestine-2 type. “The retaliatory strike has achieved its goal” the Huthi statement read.

The US continues to launch military strikes against the Huthi militia in Yemen. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in the night without further details that the attacks against the Iran-backed “Huthi terrorists” would continue. Huthi media reported two early morning airstrikes in the al-Hudaida region, approximately 230 kilometers southwest of the capital Sanaa.

The Huthi movement in Yemen declared on Monday that it had attacked the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier and a series of US warships in the Red Sea with an unspecified number of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones.

The Huthi’s move came after the US launched recent attacks on Yemen and after US President Donald Trump threatened the group on his Truth Social platform, saying the “rebel group” would be “completely destroyed.”

The Huthi, whose drone and rocket attacks on shipping in the Red Sea have significantly disrupted global trade since the end of 2023, have stated that they will continue their attacks on American and Israeli interests until the hostilities in the Gaza Strip cease. The group had paused its attacks temporarily when a ceasefire between Israel and the militant Palestinian group Hamas was declared in January. Israel broke the ceasefire over the weekend.
