Hubertz Pregnancy Sparks Outrage

The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Lars Klingbeil, has expressed deep concern regarding the public reaction to the pregnancy announcement of Federal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Building, Verena Hubertz.

Speaking to several German newspapers, Klingbeil stated he was “shocked” by the vitriol directed towards Minister Hubertz following her public announcement that she is expecting her first child in January. He emphasized that in 2025, it should be entirely commonplace for government officials, mirroring the situation for many working individuals, to become young parents without becoming targets for hatred and harassment.

Following the announcement, Minister Hubertz has faced significant backlash on social media, including comments questioning her commitment and suggesting inappropriate childcare arrangements.

Klingbeil highlighted the heightened scrutiny faced by women in public office, attributing much of the negative reaction to lingering sexism that has no place in a modern society. He noted the differing standards applied to female politicians, questioning approaches and expectations that would not be directed towards male counterparts. He underscored the responsibility of men to actively and visibly oppose sexism and misogyny, mirroring the advocacy of women.
