Huber Slams Söder Over Judges Debate

A prominent figure within the Christian Social Union (CSU) has publicly criticized recent actions by leading party members regarding the ongoing dispute surrounding the candidacy of Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf for the Federal Constitutional Court.

Former CSU chairman Erwin Huber, in an interview with “Der Spiegel”, stated that the public pressure exerted on Professor Brosius-Gersdorf by figures such as Markus Söder, Alexander Dobrindt and Dorothee Bär represents a “tactical error” that complicates the search for resolution. He advised the party to “cool down” until the September session and suggested a period of silence would be “helpful.

The dispute concerning Brosius-Gersdorf’s suitability for the court has thus far failed to yield any discernible progress between the Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Persistent criticism continues to emanate from the CSU. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt recently suggested the jurist consider withdrawing her candidacy, while Research Minister Dorothee Bär has called for the professor to demonstrate a willingness to accept criticism. Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder has previously cautioned against potential damage to the court’s reputation and expressed doubts about the likelihood of Brosius-Gersdorf’s election.
