As the mercury rises, the head of the German Federal Association for Homeless Aid, Sabine Bösing, is urging municipalities to take measures to protect the health of the homeless from the scorching heat.
Bösing emphasized that cities, although well-equipped to handle cold weather, are only recently starting to prioritize heat protection. She called on local authorities to set up drinking water stations and shaded retreats at central locations to safeguard the well-being of the homeless.
Not only should emergency shelters be accessible and equipped for the winter months, but they should also be year-round and heat-resistant, according to Bösing. Furthermore, she is demanding that the federal government enshrine a law requiring municipalities to develop heat protection plans that specifically consider the needs of the homeless.
