Historian’s Chilling Prediction

Historian's Chilling Prediction

A German historian, Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk, expects the AfD to continue gaining strength in the aftermath of the Bundestag election. According to the “Tagesspiegel”, Kowalczuk believes that an authoritarian government may emerge in Germany in the near future. He fears that the AfD’s success will spread to other regions in Germany, similar to what is being observed in many other European regions. The historian considers the development of an illiberal democracy, as seen in Hungary, to be a likely scenario in Germany and notes that the country is on the threshold of an authoritarian era.

Kowalczuk published a book titled “Freiheitsschock. Eine andere Geschichte Ostdeutschlands von 1989 bis heute” last year. In regards to the stability of peace in Europe, he expressed a pessimistic outlook, stating that the unlikeliness of a large war in Europe has lost its probability.
