A German hiker has died after a fall in the Ammergauer Alps in Austria. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, around 13:30 local time, while the man was descending the Säuling, a mountain approximately 2,000 meters high in the northern Limestone Alps.
The deceased, a 64-year-old man, lost his footing on loose gravel during the descent. He then fell approximately 80 meters down a rocky slope. The hiker was part of a group of eight German nationals, including his wife, their two children and four friends.
All remaining members of the group were unharmed and were assisted down the mountain by the Alpine Rescue service. The man’s body was recovered by a police helicopter using a rope retrieval technique. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
