Heusgen Urges Germany to Recognize Palestinian State

A former key security advisor to ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging the German government to formally recognize a Palestinian state. Christoph Heusgen, who previously served as Germany’s ambassador to the United Nations, argues that while Israel’s security remains a cornerstone of German foreign policy, that security is increasingly undermined by the escalating violence and breaches of international law impacting the region.

In a commentary published Friday, Heusgen expressed deep concern over the extent of Israeli bombardments in the Gaza Strip and the ongoing expansion of settlements in the West Bank. He voiced apprehension that warnings made by former US Secretary of State John Kerry – that Israel risked evolving into an apartheid state – are becoming increasingly prescient. He criticized the current Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu for its rejection of a Palestinian state and its perceived support for settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

He argues that under these circumstances, Germany should consider recognizing Palestinian statehood. He frames this not as an immediate solution, but as a powerful diplomatic signal. “If negotiations remain stalled, symbolic gestures can become crucial tools” he wrote. He believes recognition would demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people and carry significant weight internationally, given Germany’s long-standing reputation as a staunch ally of Israel. He suggests aligning with the majority of nations already recognizing Palestine would constitute a particularly impactful move.
