German Federal Parliament Elects Members to Parliamentary Oversight Committee
The German Federal Parliament has concluded the election of members to the Parliamentary Oversight Committee, responsible for monitoring the country’s intelligence agencies. In the process, Heidi Reichinnek, the leader of the Left Faction, failed to secure a seat, along with AfD candidates Martin Hess and Gerold Otten, who did not garner the necessary majority.
The opposition will now be represented in the committee solely by Green Party’s Konstantin von Notz. The CDU and CSU parties have secured seats for Heiko Hain, Marc Henrichmann and Alexander Throm, while the SPD has elected Daniel Baldy and Sonja Eichwede.
The Parliamentary Oversight Committee, as mandated by the Kontrollgremiumgesetz, is responsible for overseeing the Federal Intelligence Service, the Military Counterintelligence Service and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The German government is obligated to provide the committee with comprehensive information on the general activities of the country’s intelligence agencies and significant events of particular importance.
