German Healthcare Insurers Face Financial Strains, Many Increase Premiums

The financial situation of 45 out of 58 regional health insurances in Germany has reached a critical point, with only 20% of their monthly expenditures covered as of December 31, 2024, according to preliminary results from the Federal Office for Social Security (BAS).

Twenty-two of these health insurances have even depleted their reserves, the BAS revealed to the Handelsblatt in a recent report.

In an effort to rebuild their financial reserves, many health insurances have increased their additional contribution rates at the start of the year. Six health insurances, under the supervision of the BAS, have already done so and it appears that more will follow in the coming months, the BAS stated.

It remains to be seen how the financial situation of these health insurances will develop in the current year with the new premium increases in place.
