Haseloff Steps Down Schulze Gains Support

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has responded to the decision of Reiner Haseloff, Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, not to seek re-election in the upcoming state elections. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” that the move signals the end of an era.

“Reiner Haseloff has served Saxony-Anhalt for years, first as a minister and since 2011 as Minister-President. We are deeply grateful for his successful work for the state and the party” Linnemann stated.

The party is also welcoming the clarity provided regarding its candidate for the September 2026 elections. Sven Schulze is positioned as the successor to Haseloff, with the party confident he will maintain the state’s positive trajectory. Linnemann highlighted Schulze’s familiarity with the region and its key issues, adding that the federal party will provide full support during the campaign. “It is clear that stable governance requires a strong CDU and with Sven Schulze, Saxony-Anhalt will continue to be well-governed.

Sepp Müller, deputy parliamentary group leader for the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt, also welcomed Haseloff’s decision to nominate Schulze as the lead candidate. He praised Schulze’s combination of experience, expertise and resolve in navigating challenging times. Müller particularly recognized Haseloff’s dedicated service over the years, noting his commitment to fulfill his term until its completion is a clear demonstration of integrity and principle – a significant message in a period of uncertainty.
