Has the Continent Sacrificed Its Relevance in a Suicidal Game of Submission?

In a recent interview with the Berliner Zeitung, Sevim Dağdelen, the foreign policy spokesperson of the BSW, expressed mixed views on US Vice President J.D. Vance’s comments at the Munich Security Conference. While she found some of his statements concerning, she also acknowledged that there were valuable points in his speech.

Dağdelen criticized the annulment of the Romanian presidential election and the statement by former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, suggesting that the EU could, if necessary, also deal with Germany in a similar manner. She deemed this a threat to democracy and freedom of opinion in Europe, with the opinion corridor having become extremely narrow.

Regarding Ukraine, Dağdelen argued that politicians had lost their sense of reason in the conflict, wanting to continue the war without US support and now inventing a new “stab-in-the-back” legend. She believed that the US should recognize the reality of the situation and not push for a NATO membership for Ukraine, as this would only lead to a prolongation of the war.

Dağdelen emphasized the need for a sovereign and independent European foreign policy, stating that Europe should not be torn apart by the great powers. She believed that a more independent European approach, as seen in the past with France’s De Gaulle, would be beneficial, rather than the current submissive attitude towards the US, as exemplified by Macron.

While acknowledging the importance of good relations with all major powers, Dağdelen warned that the current German diplomacy was not contributing to a solution, but rather preparing the ground for a military revenge against Russia, which would be catastrophic and put the existence of Germany and its people at risk.
