Has the CDU's Chancellor Hope Crashed?

The SPD’s Saskia Esken, a party leader, has deemed CDU’s Friedrich Merz, the chancellor candidate, a complete failure in his efforts, following the rejection of the so-called “Zustrombegrenzungsgesetz” by the Bundestag.

“As a chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz has finally disqualified himself” Esken told the “Stern”. “With his uncompromising approach, he has failed to even unite his own faction behind him.”

The Bundestag had rejected the controversial bill, proposed by the CDU/CSU faction, to limit migration, amidst heated debate and concerns about potential support from the AfD.

“Friedrich Merz has bet the farm and spectacularly failed” the Social Democrat said. According to Esken, the outcome of the vote will have lasting consequences. “Friedrich Merz has made common cause with the AfD and inflicted great harm” she criticized. He alone should be held accountable for the damage. “Without necessity, he has opened the door to the far-right in the Bundestag for the AfD.” The reputational damage, inflicted by Merz on Germany’s global image, is significant.
