Habeck's Syria Slip-Up Slammed

The Green Youth has criticized Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck for his statement that Syrians without a job should return to their country if it becomes safe again.

Regardless of whether people from Syria work, go to school, or raise children, they should be allowed to stay, said Jette Nietzard, the head of the Green Youth, to the Politico news portal. The debate “lacks any foundation.” And further: “We must always stand up for human rights.”

Nietzard also accused Habeck of seeking proximity to CDU Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz on the issue of asylum policy. Just yesterday, Merz had demanded the “expatriation” of German citizens and thereby “the erosion of the constitution” she said. “This is not the time to emphasize the coalition capability with the CDU on these issues.”

Habeck had referred to work as a central criterion for a perspective for Syrian refugees on Monday in the Deutschlandfunk. “Those who do not work here will be able to or must return to the safety of their country when the land is safe again.
