Habeck Warns: Don't Let Austria Happen to Germany!

German Green Party leader Robert Habeck reiterates his role as a “coalition chancellor” in the future, urging centrist parties to be open to possible cooperation after the federal election. He described the current situation in Austria as a “scary example” of what not to do.

In a recent interview with the German news agency dpa, Habeck emphasized the importance of finding common ground and avoiding a black-and-white view of politics. He warned that if centrist parties continue to be hostile towards each other and engage in mutual litigation, it would not benefit the stability of democracy.

The Green Party candidate for chancellor also expressed his concerns about the situation in neighboring Austria, stating that it serves as a cautionary tale. He believes that if centrist parties in Germany fail to work together and compromise, it would help radical forces.

Habeck’s campaign team is set to launch a public campaign this week, featuring a projection of his image on city facades with the slogan “Coalition Chancellor.” He emphasized the need for a government that can make concessions and work together after the February 23 election.

The Green Party, Habeck said, is committed to democratic coalitions and dialogue with civil society, and he is willing to take responsibility for a politics that puts the country’s interests first, not his own.

Despite his party’s relatively low poll numbers, with 13 to 14 percent of the vote, Habeck remains optimistic about his chances of becoming chancellor and leading a coalition government.
