Green party’s candidate for chancellor, Robert Habeck, is calling for stricter controls on the right to bear arms in the debate over new security laws. ” Weapons should not end up in the wrong hands” Habeck told the Funke media group and the French newspaper Ouest-France. “Someone who wants to acquire a weapon should have to present a psychological testimony. This would make it more difficult for psychologically unstable individuals to access firearms.”
Habeck also demands a legal framework to improve the cooperation of security agencies. A law is needed, he says, to precisely define the information that security services in the Joint Counter-Terrorism Center in Germany must exchange with each other in various threat scenarios. “There is a constitutional imperative that the police and intelligence agencies should not be merged, but they must talk to each other” Habeck demands, “and for that, a legal basis is needed that also names clear responsibilities.”
Habeck also reminds that the government coalition had proposed regulations for automatic data analysis to improve the information flows between the police and intelligence agencies and between the various police authorities. “We presented the legal basis for this in the security package that the Union has blocked in the Bundesrat” he said.
