After the CDU’s young politician Christoph R. was brutally murdered on January 14, the police have now arrested a suspect. According to a media report, the 24-year-old Mahmadou-Alpha B. from Guinea allegedly attacked a woman and severely injured her on Sunday morning.
The spokesperson for the Potsdam State’s Attorney, Hanna Urban, initially refused to provide information on the victim’s identity and origin. However, according to the B.Z. newspaper, the victim is a 54-year-old Ukrainian woman named Vita S.
The police investigation revealed that Vita S. was massaged by Mahmadou-Alpha B. on the couch and suddenly, he wrapped his hands around her neck, almost choking her. She then felt a cut on her neck and turned around to defend herself. B. allegedly released her and jumped out of the first-floor window, injuring himself in the process.
The emergency doctor found a 5-centimeter deep cut on Vita S.’s neck, but it was not life-threatening. The police classified the incident as an attempted murder. B. was arrested shortly after in his apartment, where he was initially taken to a hospital under police custody.
According to Hanna Urban, the same suspect is involved in both cases. The Potsdam State’s Attorney is now conducting a trial against the 24-year-old man from Guinea, accused of murder and attempted murder in Beelitz-Heilstätten.
The investigators only suspected a connection between the two crimes after the Sunday incident, as the same address was involved in the January 14 incident, where a fire broke out in the apartment of CDU politician Christoph R. The police found out that the unknown perpetrator had set the fire to cover up the murder of Christoph R., who was found dead with a cut throat in his burning apartment.
Neighbors managed to rescue Christoph R. from the burning apartment, but he died at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear whether a weapon was found or what evidence the police have against the suspect.
