A New York Jury Has Reached a Partial Guilty Verdict in the Re-Trial of Harvey Weinstein

A New York jury delivered a partial guilty verdict in the re-trial of former film producer Harvey Weinstein, following five days of deliberations. The jury found Weinstein guilty of a sex crime in one case and not guilty in another. In the case where he was found guilty, the sex crime in question was a criminal sexual act. The jury was unable to reach a verdict in a third case, where the charge was rape. The deliberations will continue on Thursday.

Weinstein’s re-trial in New York was necessary after a higher court overturned his 2020 conviction in the past year. He was accused of raping an aspiring actress and sexually assaulting two other women. He had pleaded not guilty and denied having assaulted anyone or engaging in non-consensual sex.

Weinstein was first publicly accused of sexually harassing multiple women in October 2017, which led to the so-called Weinstein scandal. In March 2020, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for various sexual offenses and in February 2023, he received an additional 16-year sentence – the re-trial was about the first verdict.
