At the Munich Security Conference in Washington, US-Vice President J.D. Vance showed a conciliatory attitude towards Europe. However, skepticism prevails among the Greens. “It is initially a good sign that Vance has shifted his rhetoric. It is likely that the Trump administration has realized that they went too far in Munich. However, we must not be naive: Trump will continue to pursue a disruptive strategy and be unpredictable” said Green Bundestag member Jamila Schäfer to the “Welt” (Friday edition).
Schäfer traveled to the event with her party colleague Agnieszka Brugger and German Green European Parliament member Sergej Lagodinsky. She stated that there is apparently significant disagreement among Republicans about the correct strategy. Her conclusion: “The transatlantic relationship will remain important, but it will continue to be characterized by ambivalence. Germany and Europe must not fall back into old patterns and rely solely on the USA, but must continue to work on an independent security policy and operational capability.
