Greens Urge Swift Action on AfD Ban

Following a recent legal setback for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, members of the Green Party are advocating for accelerated steps toward a potential ban. The setback occurred Tuesday when the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig dismissed an appeal related to the party’s classification as a suspected right-wing extremist case.

Katharina Dröge, parliamentary group leader of the Green Party in the Bundestag, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that it is a “democratic duty” to utilize all available legal avenues to address a party allegedly aiming to dismantle democratic principles. She called on all democratic forces to collaborate closely.

Dröge stressed that the judicial process to definitively determine the AfD’s standing through all court instances could take years. She argued that waiting for this lengthy process is untenable and urged the federal government, state governments and democratic parliamentary factions to jointly initiate a ban procedure without delay.

A key proposal involves establishing a joint federal-state commission. This body would be tasked with compiling and evaluating existing materials already submitted to authorities concerning the party, facilitating a more efficient assessment for potential action. This recent court decision does not pertain to the more recent classification of the AfD as reliably right-wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
