Greens Urge Merz To Boost Ukraine Aid

A group of Green Party members of the German Bundestag have formally urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz to increase financial aid for Ukraine. According to a report by “Bild” the appeal, conveyed in a written communication, calls on the Chancellor to adjust relevant budget allocations to bolster support for Ukraine both in the current process and with consideration for the upcoming fiscal year.

The Green Party parliamentarians – Robin Wagener, Sara Nanni, Sebastian Schäfer and Anton Hofreiter – expressed concern that failing to increase aid would make a “Russian dictate over Ukraine” more probable.

The letter also notes the Green Party’s instrumental role in facilitating a significant increase in Ukraine assistance through previous parliamentary majorities and reforms to Germany’s debt brake. Addressing Chancellor Merz directly, the Green politicians emphasized that they have created avenues for supporting Ukraine that remain untapped.
