Greens to Block-Bust €500B Infrastructure Deal?

A German politician, Katharina Dröge, the leader of the Greens in the Bundestag, has expressed reservations about the recent agreement between the Union and the SPD to allocate a special fund of 500 billion euros for infrastructure and to reform the debt brake to allow for higher defense spending. Dröge stated in an interview that the Greens will need to discuss the matter and decide whether to support the plans and that she will not make a decision based on being asked to do so, but rather will carefully consider the details.

Dröge criticized the lack of mention of climate protection in the infrastructure special fund and questioned why the plan for defense spending allows for a permanent credit capacity, while the infrastructure fund does not. The Greens had previously called for an infrastructure special fund during the 2021 election campaign, but were unable to break the blockade of the FDP and the Union at the time.

Dröge stated that the Greens have not yet discussed their plans with the future coalition partners, the Union and the SPD, but will do so in the future. She added that the Greens are willing to take swift action if they come to the conclusion that the plans are correct.
