Discontent is brewing within Germany’s Green Party regarding the Social Democrats’ (SPD) handling of a potential candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court. According to Britta Haßelmann, leader of the Green parliamentary group, SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch has publicly stated a name has been identified without first engaging in necessary consultations with all democratic factions. Haßelmann characterized this approach as imprudent, particularly given the recent failed attempt to appoint a judge to the court and warned it was fueling unnecessary speculation.
She emphasized the need to prevent further damage to the reputation of the court, to any proposed candidates and to the election process itself, following what she described as a chaotic and unprecedented situation surrounding the previous failed selection.
Sources indicate that neither the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) nor the Green Party have been informed of the proposed candidate. Haßelmann alluded to a deep-seated lack of trust between coalition partners following the recent difficulties and called on both CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn and Miersch to demonstrate reliability and decisiveness.
The Green politician stressed the importance of securing the upcoming judicial election through a democratic process, asserting that discussions between all democratic factions are essential to achieving this.
