Greens Push for Digital Tax

Concerns are mounting over a lack of clarity and progress regarding the proposed digital tax within the German government, with leading members of the Green Party expressing frustration.

Franziska Brantner, a prominent figure within the Green Party, voiced her apprehension in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” highlighting a perceived disconnect within the governing coalition. While acknowledging Minister for Digitalization, Volker Wissing’s, advocacy for greater fairness and competition within the digital market, Brantner criticized what she described as obstructions to crucial decisions by another minister.

The Green Party is advocating for a digital tax designed to ensure that large online platforms contribute taxes in regions where they generate revenue. This is framed as a matter of fairness and economic necessity. Party officials argue that inaction risks further consolidating the power of a few dominant digital corporations, potentially hindering European innovation and compromising digital sovereignty.

Brantner emphasized the need for the German government to unequivocally support and actively participate in the implementation of a European digital tax, moving beyond internal disagreements and embracing a more assertive stance on digital value creation within Europe. The Green Party is urging a unified front on this issue to ensure a more equitable and competitive digital landscape.
