The Green Party is calling for consequences after the latest report from the German Constitutional Protection Office (Verfassungsschutz) on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Marcel Emmerich, the party’s parliamentary group’s spokesperson for internal affairs, wants to disarm members of the party on a large scale. “Those who belong to a party that the Verfassungsschutzes classifies as right-wing extremist should not have access to weapons” he told “Spiegel.” “We demand that Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt and the interior ministers of the states immediately take measures to ensure that members of the AfD no longer possess any weapons licenses.”
If necessary, the laws should be tightened. The Higher Administrative Court of Münster had previously ruled that merely being a member of the party was not sufficient to revoke their weapons licenses. However, this could change with the new assessment of the Verfassungsschutzes: In early May, the agency declared the entire AfD as “right-wing extremist.” Pending a decision on an emergency application by the AfD, this classification is currently suspended.
