A group that has already introduced a motion in the 20th German Bundestag to examine the possibility of banning the AfD will make another attempt in the newly elected parliament. “Our goal remains to bring a group procedure to the floor in the next legislative period” said Green Party politician Till Steffen to the ARD Hauptstadtstudio.
His SPD colleague Carmen Wegge acknowledged that in the outgoing Bundestag, there was still no realistic chance of a majority and that no special Bundestag session was planned anymore. “However, I will continue to advocate for a procedure against the AfD in Karlsruhe. The AfD poses the greatest danger to our democracy and I am convinced that it meets the requirements for a party ban” she said.
The initiative, which aimed to prompt the Bundestag to submit a ban request to the Federal Constitutional Court, was only discussed in the first reading in the Bundestag and then remained in the Interior Committee. With the entry of a new Bundestag, the motion falls out of relevance: it will become obsolete.
