In a surprising move, Green Party politician Michael Kellner laid Angela Merkel’s autobiography on the government bench during a debate on the budget law, claiming to “drive out evil spirits.”
According to Kellner, parliamentary state secretary in the economy ministry of Robert Habeck (Greens), such political gestures like interrupting or clapping are not allowed on the government bench. “I don’t believe incense drives out evil spirits, but maybe Merkel’s words do. I thought her book was quite fitting in this context” he told the news portal T-Online.
Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) had previously described as “false” the claim by Union’s chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz that he had a majority for his resolution on migration policy, thanks to the votes of the AfD. This was the first time a majority in the German Bundestag was formed solely by the votes of the AfD. The Greens strongly criticized this development.
