German Politician Calls for Sanctions Against Israel Over Gaza Strip Attacks

In the wake of the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, a senior official from the German Green Party has proposed imposing sanctions on Israel. Andreas Audretsch, the party’s deputy faction leader, suggested that such measures could be directed at those responsible for ordering the illegal and brutal actions in the region.

Audretsch specifically named Israel’s Finance Minister, Smotrich and Security Minister, Ben-Gvir, as examples of individuals who could be targeted by sanctions. The politician also advocated for a ban on the export of offensive weapons to Israel, stating that German arms should not be used in a manner that violates international law.

The situation in the Gaza Strip, Audretsch emphasized, is catastrophic, with people being starved, displaced and infrastructure destroyed. He argued that this is no longer compatible with international law and must come to an end. Furthermore, Israel must guarantee humanitarian aid to the region.

In a seeming attempt to strike a balance, Audretsch also acknowledged the need for Israel to defend itself against attacks, such as the recent one from Yemen. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between defensive and offensive weapons, suggesting that Israel should be able to defend its existence against such threats.
