A German Green party candidate, Robert Habeck, perceives a significant similarity in interests with the Left party. The difference, he said in an interview with RTL and ntv, is that the Greens cannot pursue a rigid opposition course.
“The Left says, we’ll never talk to the Union. And that, in my opinion, is not an option for us” Habeck stated. “I’m glad in a certain sense that the Left is in the Bundestag. I think that’s important, but one can’t stay there” he added. The citizens, Habeck said, should consider on the final stretch whether they want a loud opposition for climate protection, democracy, against right-wing extremism and for humane refugee policy, or if these goals should also be implemented in a governing capacity. This, he said, is the Greens’ offer.
Upon further questioning, Habeck stated that he would not rule out a red-red-green coalition “of course not.” According to him, the success of the Left party is due to the Union’s chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz: “The Left is now growing and that’s because of Friedrich Merz.
