Green Leader Praises Merkel-esque Foreign Policy

A senior figure within the German Green Party has publicly commended the foreign policy approach of CDU leader Friedrich Merz, particularly regarding the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Felix Banaszak, co-leader of the Greens, told RTL and ntv stations that Merz has conveyed “signals that I would occasionally have expected from Chancellor Scholz in recent years.

However, Banaszak also expressed criticisms related to domestic policy and economic strategy. He noted a perceived lack of significant progress in internal affairs and attributed the recent decline in asylum seeker numbers to policies implemented by the prior government. “The measures taken in recent years are now demonstrating their effect” he stated.

Furthermore, Banaszak leveled accusations against Merz and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, suggesting they are contributing to a scenario where Germany’s economic recovery is hampered. He pointed to the absence of a robust investment agenda and highlighted concerns raised by economic research institutes emphasizing the potential for greater economic growth through more substantial investments from a designated special fund.
