Green Co-Chair Warns of Putin's Delight

German Greens Co-Chair Criticizes SPD’s Lacking Unity on Foreign and Security Policy

In a recent interview, Franziska Brantner, the Co-Chair of the German Greens, expressed her concerns over the lack of unity within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) on foreign and security policy. She criticized the SPD for its apparent disarray, saying that it is a “cacophony” and a “bad sign” for Germany’s and Europe’s security.

Brantner emphasized the need for a strong and united government, which is not currently the case within the SPD. She pointed out that relevant actors within the party seem to be disregarding their own party leader, Vice-Chancellor and Defense Minister, a situation that could be exploited by Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Brantner, Putin would likely be delighted by the German government’s disunity and would not hesitate to take advantage of the situation.

The Greens’ Co-Chair also expressed her skepticism towards the idea of gradually resuming cooperation with Russia, which she believes is premature. Brantner argued that constant talks with the Russian government, including with Putin, have not led to any significant progress and that the current situation is far from a peaceful resolution. She emphasized that the Greens would not support any proposals that could be seen as a concession to Putin’s demands, which she believes are aimed at dividing the Ukraine and achieving his long-standing goals.
