German Vice President of the Bundestag, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, defended a proposal by Economics Minister Robert Habeck to introduce taxes on capital gains to finance social insurance. She argued in an interview with ntv and RTL’s “Frühstart” program on Tuesday that this would lead to a fairer financing of the healthcare system. “It does not concern those who save for retirement, nor small and medium savers, but rather those who have millions working for them and no longer work themselves” she said.
Criticism from the Union, FDP, and SPD was rejected by Göring-Eckardt. “It’s not about spreading white salve in the election campaign and pretending that the money magically appears” she explained. “If one wants fairness and for systems to function, then one must also make honest proposals. And this is one such.
