Germany's Top Prosecutor Takes the Reins in Munich Terror Probe

The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation into the attack in Munich, while the police investigations against the 24-year-old Afghan, Farhad N., will continue at the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office.

The charges against him include attempted murder, dangerous bodily harm and severe interference with public road traffic. The suspicion is that the act was motivated by religion and can be understood as an attack on the free democratic constitutional order, thus posing a threat to the internal security of the Federal Republic of Germany, as stated in the press release.

The perpetrator is currently in pre-trial detention. According to the state prosecutor, who spoke at the Munich police press conference, he had telephoned his family the day before the attack, saying, “tomorrow, maybe I won’t be there anymore.”

The number of injured is now reported to be 39, with many of the lightly injured having sought medical attention from their family doctors, which is why they were initially not accounted for.

In response to the attack, the German Bundestag has scheduled several special sessions for the coming week, including the Interior Committee and the Parliamentary Control Committee, responsible for the intelligence services, which will meet outside of regular schedule.
