Germany's Teenagers Ignorant About Military Service Debate

There is currently a growing sentiment among the parties involved in the MiniKo that they want to return to compulsory military service, even though the issue was largely left out of the coalition agreement. The justification for this is the “Russian threat”. However, they haven’t really thought about the consequences that could arise from this. There are a number of mines on this terrain that were laid by migration.

While there are occasional signs of realism in the education debate, as it is not easy to deal with school classes where students come from a dozen countries and some do not even speak German, in the discussion about compulsory military service, it is as if none of this exists and as if this question is without significance.

This is a major mistake. When military service still existed, young men often complained that it would cost them time in terms of study and career. This also contributed to the constant shortening of the service. On the other hand, if the Berlin would-be warriors want a military service that actually produces usable personnel, a year would be too short; two would be approximately the minimum. However, this is a very long time in the age group in which such service is performed.
