Germany's President Urges Unity

German Federal Parliament President Bärbel Bas (SPD) has called on parties to show respect and a willingness to compromise following the federal election. “When the election results are in on Monday, the campaign is over” Bas told the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition). Then, politicians must “seek sustainable solutions for the people of Germany.”

At the same time, one must show “compromise and respect across party lines and interact with each other in a respectful manner” the Federal Parliament President said. “By doing so, we strengthen the trust in our free and democratic system.”

Bas appealed to citizens to make use of their voting right in the federal election on Sunday. “Those who vote take an influence: on the future of all of us, on the direction in which our country is heading” the Federal Parliament President said. Additionally, one takes responsibility for democracy. “Every single vote is of equal value” she added.
