SPD Foreign Policy Official Michael Müller Speaks Out for a Nationwide Ban on Private Fireworks Use after Reports of Widespread Misuse of Rockets and Firecrackers on New Year’s Eve.
A nationwide ban on firecrackers should finally be discussed, he said in an interview with RTL and ntv. “There’s no reason why we accept that professional fireworks are allowed 364 days a year, but on one day of the year, anyone can do as they please. Why is that?”, Müller asked. In his view, there are increasingly more people who find this form of threat completely unacceptable.
He also pointed out the danger of illegal fireworks. In Berlin, a house was damaged by the pressure wave of a firecracker. “That’s a bomb that was lit” he said, adding, “You can’t accept that.”
“I believe you can have a very nice New Year’s Eve celebration with the professional fireworks we see here, at the Brandenburg Gate and in other cities in our country” Müller said, and added, “Why do we accept this threat?
