German Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan Warns of a One-Sided and Harsh Migration Policy

German Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan has cautioned against a one-sided and harsh migration policy, warning that it would be detrimental to the country’s reputation and could even harm its own economic well-being. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Alabali-Radovan emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, stating that Germany must continue to project a willingness to cooperate with the world, rather than solely relying on border rejections as a signal to the rest of the world.

The minister expressed concerns that many people with a migration background are experiencing racism and exclusion in their daily lives in Germany, which not only endangers the individuals but also the country’s cohesion and social fabric. Alabali-Radovan, who herself immigrated to Germany with her parents, warned that this trend has a ripple effect, deterring skilled workers from coming to the country, which is crucial for the nation’s economic prosperity.

Alabali-Radovan also acknowledged that changes to the migration policy were to be expected, given the coalition agreement and that she would be willing to work within the framework of the agreement. However, she emphasized the need for a nuanced approach, one that balances the need for control with the importance of cooperation and a welcoming attitude towards migrants.
