German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed a positive assessment of the G7 summit in Canada, citing a consensus among the member states on all discussed topics. Merz, who returned to Germany on Tuesday, praised the outcome, stating that the summit was more successful than he had initially anticipated.
The Chancellor highlighted the agreement on a joint stance on the Iran’s nuclear program, which was concluded the previous evening. He also mentioned that the US President’s early departure on Monday evening was due to the need to prepare further decisions from the US administration.
During the final working session, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a guest and the leaders discussed how to bring Russia to the negotiating table as soon as possible. Merz emphasized that there is a consensus, not only within the European Union but also among the G7, to continue military support for Ukraine and to explore all possibilities, including imposing sanctions on Russia.
The European Union has already presented a comprehensive package and Merz returned to Germany with cautious optimism, hoping that the US will take decisions in the coming days to impose further sanctions on Russia. The leaders agreed that everything must be done to end the war as soon as possible.
The agenda also included supporting Ukraine in its own weapons production, with potential investment partnerships being discussed on the sidelines of the summit.
