Recent Russian aerial assaults against Ukraine have prompted calls for stronger action from the German government. Roderich Kiesewetter, a prominent foreign policy representative of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), voiced his concerns in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” stating that Russia appears to demonstrate a pattern of destructive intent rather than a commitment to a negotiated peace.
Kiesewetter criticized what he described as unproductive attempts at facilitating dialogue and pursuing unrealistic cease-fire expectations, advocating for Germany to emulate the approach of Nordic and Baltic nations. He proposed significantly increasing both military and financial aid to Ukraine, including the provision of advanced weaponry such as Taurus missiles and unlocking the assets of Russia frozen in Germany to support Ukraine’s war effort.
According to Ukrainian Air Force reports, the recent wave of attacks involved a substantial number of Shahed-Kamikaze drones (810), as well as nine Iskander-K missiles and four ballistic missiles of the Iskander-M or KN-23 types. Notably, a government building in the capital city of Kyiv was directly targeted for the first time.
