German Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig Urges Better Social Media Regulation Amid Rising Radicalization Concerns
In the wake of the latest domestic intelligence report, which has highlighted a growing radicalization trend among younger individuals, German Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig has emphasized the need for stricter social media regulation.
Hubig, a member of the Social Democratic Party, expressed alarm at the increasing radicalization of young people, stating that social media plays a significant role in this trend. She emphasized the need for a clear age limit for platforms like TikTok and others, which must be effectively enforced.
The minister also emphasized the importance of implementing the EU’s Digital Services Act, which sets clear guidelines for the dissemination of criminally relevant content. However, Hubig identified gaps in child and youth protection, particularly in the area of age verification. She warned that even legal content could be problematic for children and young people and that it is unacceptable for 10- or 12-year-olds to be radicalized and indoctrinated through their smartphones.
