The number of new apprenticeships in Germany has increased in 2024. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the preliminary results show that the number of new apprenticeships rose by nine percent or 5,100 to around 59,500, compared to the previous year.
At the end of 2024, a total of 147,100 people were in training to become a care professional, a figure that has barely changed from the end of 2023 (146,900).
While the number of female apprentices in 2024 decreased by one percent or 1,200 to 108,700 (2023: 109,900), the number of male apprentices increased by four percent or 1,400 to 38,400. As a result, women still made up 74 percent of care apprentices, a proportion that has remained largely constant since the introduction of the new care apprenticeship in 2020, when the proportion of women was 76 percent.
Preliminary results for the year 2024 are also available for care students in bachelor’s degree programs at universities. According to the statisticians, around 1,200 students were in a care program at the end of 2024, of whom about 700 were first-year students.
