Matthias Miersch, the parliamentary group leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has expressed his concerns about the plans of Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to maintain a permanent occupation of the Gaza Strip. Miersch believes that such actions would contradict international law. In an interview with the “Spiegel” magazine, Miersch stated that controlling areas permanently or displacing the Palestinian civilian population would be a blatant violation of international law.
The occasion for Miersch’s comments is the upcoming visit of his coalition colleague and new Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul (CDU), to Israel this weekend. Miersch emphasized the close connection between Germany and Israel, mentioning that Germany has a historical responsibility for the atrocities committed during the past. “Germany, as a country that has assumed immense guilt, has been in close partnership with Israel for six decades, which remains a historical miracle and a lasting obligation” said Miersch.
However, Miersch also expects clear words from Wadephul regarding Israel. “I trust that Foreign Minister Wadephul will also speak out about uncomfortable truths in Israel” said Miersch. Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorism and to free hostages, but it also has the responsibility to adhere to humanitarian international law. “The situation in the Gaza Strip is dramatic. Humanitarian aid must reach the people unhindered. This is not a political issue but a legal obligation under international law” said Miersch.
