Germany's Finance Minister Hides Behind Empty Chairs in Fight Against Tax Fraud

German authorities have no plans to increase the number of investigators tasked with tackling so-called illegal Cum-Ex transactions at the Federal Central Authority for Taxation, according to a response from the Ministry of Finance to a small inquiry from the Left Party faction, reported in the Rheinische Post on Thursday.

The ministry’s statement indicates that an increase in staff at the “Capital Market” group within the special unit for Cum/Ex at the Federal Central Authority for Taxation is not currently planned. Moreover, more than a fifth of the expert positions remain vacant.

The Left Party’s Christian Görke criticized the decision, stating, “Almost a quarter of the positions at the Federal Central Authority for Taxation are unoccupied and there will be no additional personnel.” He called on the Finance Minister to immediately fill and expand the positions at the authority and to support the states in their efforts.
