Germany's FDP Demands Emergency Budget Meeting for Ukraine's Desperate Hour

In the face of Ukraine’s challenging situation, the FDP faction is calling on the federal government to quickly prepare new military aid for the country. To this end, the FDP is requesting a special session of the Budget Committee for Wednesday. This is revealed in a letter from the First Parliamentary Manager of the FDP faction, Johannes Vogel, to the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas (SPD), which the “Handelsblatt” reported on.

“Against the backdrop of the developments at the Munich Security Conference and the already planned talks between the US and Russia for this week, a session is still necessary in this week to quickly and decisively set a sign for the continued support of Germany” Vogel writes. The requested special session is meant to discuss and, if necessary, decide on further support measures for Ukraine, or to clarify why the government believes they are not necessary.

There has been a dispute over a possible new support package worth three billion euros for weeks. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is only willing to provide the aid if the debt brake is suspended by a state of emergency decree. According to the view of the Union and the FDP, the help can also be financed in another way. The FDP’s deputy faction leader, Christoph Meyer, is now calling on Federal Finance Minister Jörg Kukies (SPD) to deliver the three-billion-euro draft for the Budget Committee. “The Bundestag has already exposed the lie of Olaf Scholz and the debt brake emergency by a resolution, now Minister Kukies must deliver the three-billion-euro draft for the Budget Committee” Meyer said. “Whether Bundestag President Bas allows the special session or, by refusing, supports Olaf Scholz in his SPD ‘peace’ election campaign, will be shown.
