Germany's Evangelical Church Opens Doors to Beat the Heat

German Church Leader Announces Plan to Open Church Buildings as Cooling Shelters

The President of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Kirsten Fehrs, has announced that church buildings will be made available as cool shelters during the summer. According to the Rheinische Post, Fehrs stated, “The Evangelical Church also wants to make a contribution to heat protection this summer with open church spaces.”

Churches, Fehrs emphasized, are not only places of faith but also of shelter – particularly on hot days. In the spaces of the church and diakonia, people can come to rest, recharge and feel protected – with cool air and human warmth.
