Germany's Cold Shoulder on Ukraine Peace Force?

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has expressed skepticism about the prospect of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine involving the German military. “Everyone knows that’s not a topic right now” Scholz told Politico, adding that it’s still unclear under what conditions Ukraine would be willing to agree to a peace settlement.

Scholz emphasized the need for American involvement in any solution. “It’s clear to me that there can be no solution that is not also a solution with the involvement of the US” he said, reiterating the importance of maintaining transatlantic unity.

The Chancellor also warned against being too conciliatory towards Moscow. “The next task is to ensure that there is no dictate peace” Scholz said, emphasizing that Ukraine must have the opportunity to develop after a peace settlement and maintain a strong army, equipped with Western weapons, larger than it was before the war.

Scholz is counting on continued US support for Ukraine, citing his conversations with US President Donald Trump and the discussions between his advisors and theirs, which he believes indicate that the US will continue to support Ukraine.
