German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Holds Telephonic Talks with Japanese and Indian Counterparts

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz engaged in a series of telephone conversations with his Japanese and Indian counterparts, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday.

In his discussion with Ishiba, Merz highlighted the significance of the friendly relations between Germany and Japan, according to a government spokesperson, Stefan Kornelius. The two leaders also agreed to deepen their partnership, with a focus on close cooperation within the G7 and G20 frameworks.

The two leaders also touched on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Merz and Ishiba reaffirming their commitment to continuing their support for Ukraine and calling for a full and unconditional ceasefire.

In his conversation with Modi, Merz and the Indian prime minister emphasized their determination to strengthen their strategic partnership on all levels, with a particular focus on security cooperation and economic ties, Kornelius said. The two leaders also exchanged views on recent developments between India and Pakistan, although no further details were provided.

Modi extended an invitation to Merz to visit India in the second half of the year, the spokesperson added.
