Germany's CDU Leader Promises to Include Afghan Local Forces in Resettlement Plan Despite Union's Stance on Voluntary Inclusion.

In Pakistan and Afghanistan, 32 former German military local staff members are currently waiting to come to Germany as promised. This information comes from the response of the German government to a written question by CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter, which was reported by the “Spiegel”. According to the response, 15 individuals are in Pakistan and 17 are still in Afghanistan. In addition, there are 178 family members of these 32 people.

The Union has announced that it will stop the voluntary admission of people from Afghanistan. CDU leader Friedrich Merz had explicitly announced this during the election campaign, including for former local staff members. However, Kiesewetter said, “The almost 20-year deployment of the German military in Afghanistan was only possible with the help of local staff members, who can rely on the fact that Germany will keep its promises and protect them and their families.”

According to Kiesewetter, Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) had promised the local staff members of the German military protection from Germany and this promise should be kept and the remaining local staff members should not be left in the lurch.
