Germany Warns of Catastrophic Escalation

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul’s Saudi Arabia Visit Highlights Regional Tensions

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, of the Christian Democratic Union, expressed concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East during his recent visit to Saudi Arabia. In a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Wadephul discussed the regional situation, stating that the situation remains highly volatile, as evident by the nightly attacks in both directions. The real danger of further escalation is a pressing concern, according to a statement from the German Foreign Ministry.

Wadephul emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program poses a threat not only to Israel but also to Saudi Arabia and the stability of the entire region, reiterating the clear desire of regional states to avoid nuclear armament. Germany, too, is committed to de-escalation, the minister added.

During his remarks, Wadephul also drew attention to the current situation in Gaza, describing the humanitarian situation as catastrophic. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire, highlighting the importance of a shared perspective for the period following the truce. The Arab plan for reconstruction, Wadephul noted, provides a crucial foundation for this effort.
